How to be a Girl Conference

Next month Girls attending 7th to 12th grade  are eligible to become a part of the conference. World Renowned Author and Talk Show host Dr. Gilda Carle joins Award-Winning Community Activist and Radio Personality Josefa Salinas to change the lives of 50 girls from Los Angeles this summer at the “How to Be a Girl” conference.  Experts say investing and empowering young girls is key to their success in the future.

The free, fabulous, five-day conference will give girls the tools to succeed:

  • college preparation
  • life skills like balancing a checkbook
  • improving self-image through living a nutritious and healthy lifestyle
  • Social Media
  • Technology and the future
  • Healthy Relationships and much more!

The five-day conference will take place from Aug. 23-27, 2010 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Dockweiler Youth Center in Los Angeles.   The conference will be filmed to create a documentary that will hopefully inspire girls across the country.  And the experience doesn’t end at the end of the week.  Each girl will have the opportunity to be a part of the “How to be a Girl” mentorship program during the school year for continued support and guidance.

To be accepted, candidates must submit an essay no more than 300 words explaining why they want to change their lives and participate.  They have until Friday, Aug. 6, 2010 to send in their entries via email to HowToBeaGirl2010@aol.com.

Become a Back to School barganista!

Sooner than later parents around the world have to face the challenge of “Back to School” shopping.  We tackle it around the 2nd week of August.  I try not to take the kids with me, only because I hate giving them choices.  If I give them the “option” of picking out what they want, FORGET IT!  I learned that lesson last year when shopping for Jeremiah and Jonah. I tried to be “savvy” while they were trying to be “fashionable”.

First Day of School ’09

This year… I face any even BIGGER challenge.  I have all three kids going to school.

Yay for my sanity. Boooo for hubby’s pocket!

I (like I’m sure most of you) love a good bargain!  Especially, when it comes to the kids.  I don’t have the pleasure of  “hand me downs” since the boys are too far in age.  With Sarai… well, you know how that goes!

Marshalls and T.J.Maxx are great ways to go!  Getting brand names at a price I can afford.

I have several Marshalls close to me.  I can drive by and pick up some stuff like this! I can totally see Jonah liking the Cars School supplies.  For those with college kids, cool dorm decor and hip fashion!

I have been to T.J.Maxx here where I live, but I have yet to buy something there.  I just think I was in the shopping mood!  I have a prima who can spend h o u r s…. at these store and come out with bags full of stuff.  I wish I can be like that.  In reality, the way I shop is very simple. Get in, get what I need, get out.  Like I said, I have to been in a “shopping mood” to really get in the stores and shop.  T.J.Maxx is perfect for that!

See being a fashionista for the kids doesn’t have to hurt your pocket book. From backpacks to Chones to shoes… T.J.Maxx has you covered.

Happy shopping!  Come back and tell me what you find… :)

*Disclaimer* I have received nothing for this post. I’m just working on some back to school stuff…

Coming soon to DVD from 20th Century Fox

Great movies for kids coming out soon!  Check it out…

Halloween comes early when two new collections of spooky Goosebumps® stories scream onto DVD September 7 . The Blob That Ate Everyone and Go Eat Worms! each feature three tales of horror based on author R.L. Stine’s best-selling Goosebumps books series, a global publishing phenomenon from Scholastic, Inc. that has sold over 300 million copies worldwide.

Winter is coming and it’s time for Strawberry and her friend to celebrate!  Out on August 31st, this full-length CGI feature film, Strawberry Shortcake: The Glimmerberry Ball Movie follows Strawberry and friends as they prepare to celebrate the coming of winter with a secret gift exchange and a festive winter ball.  But, when someone destroys their decorations and the girls all carve the same design in the Glimmerberry Ball lantern event, they have some mysteries to solve in an endearing fun-filled adventure.

From its origins as a series of online cartoons, Diary of a Wimpy Kid exploded onto the pop culture scene when Jeff Kinney’s first novel was published in 2007. Coming to DVD and Blu-ray August 3. Selling over 30 million copies in print, Diary of a Wimpy Kid spent almost three years on The New York Times’ children’s best-seller list and has been translated into 33 languages.

Great for Moms and Dads:

One ordinary couple. One crazy night. The uproarious story of mistaken identity starring two of the world’s biggest comedic talents, Date Night arrives on Blu-ray and DVD August 10. Filled with non-stop laughs and outrageous situations, Date Night follows Steve Carell (“The Office”) and Tina Fey (“30 Rock”) as a sensible, loving couple with two kids and a house in suburban New Jersey. Their typical date nights include a run-of-the-mill evening with little to no romance, but one night they decide to reignite the spark by going to Manhattan’s hottest new restaurant… without a reservation. What happens next is a wild ride that goes hilariously awry, as they embark on a dangerous series of crazy adventures to save their lives, and their marriage.

Hailed by Sports Illustrated as “a damn good baseball movie” and ranked the #1 sports movie of all time*, Bull Durham hits a new high when it debuts on Blu-ray August 3 from MGM Home Entertainment.  Covering all bases with critics, men and women alike, the film about sports and sex from writer/director Ron Shelton (White Men Can’t Jump, Cobb) stars Oscarâ winners Kevin Costner (Dances With Wolves, Mr. Brooks), Susan Sarandon (Enchanted, Dead Man Walking) and Tim Robbins (War of the Worlds, Mystic River).

Two-time Golden Globe® winner* David Duchovny (“Californication”) and two-time Golden Globe® nominee** Demi Moore (Ghost) star as a seemingly perfect couple in the comedy The Joneses arriving on Blu-ray Disc and DVD August 10. The flawless and fashionable Joneses are the envy of their posh, suburban neighborhood filled with all the trappings of the upper middle class. They are the ultimate trendsetters with an endless supply of high-tech toys, designer clothes, fast cars and the latest gadgets. But as the neighbors try to keep up with the Joneses, none are prepared for the truth about this all too perfect family.

From TV:

One of the highest rated new television shows of the year, the engaging, honest and hilarious “mockumentary” view of today’s non-traditional households, “Modern Family” The Complete First Season debuts on Blu-ray and DVD September 21. Come join the family for the laugh-out-loud and critically-acclaimed breakout hit of the year.

‘Gleeks’ and ‘Cheerios’ worldwide will celebrate September 14 when the groundbreaking musical comedy – GLEE: The Complete First Season “The GLEEK Edition” – debuts on Blu-ray and DVD.  Featuring all 22 one-hour episodes including the highly anticipated “The Power of Madonna” episode and other fan-favorites. From series creator Ryan Murphy (“Nip/Tuck”), GLEE: The Complete First Season “The GLEEK Edition” Blu-ray and DVD is pitch-perfect with more than two hours of never-before-seen extras sure to hit the right note.

The highest rated movie to premiere on Lifetime, Amish Grace arrives on DVD September 14. Based on a true story and the book Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy by Donald B. Kraybill, Steven M. Nolt, and David L. Weaver-Zercher, Amish Grace chronicles the community of Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, forever changed when a gunman senselessly takes the lives of five girls in a schoolhouse shooting before taking his own life in October of 2006. What transpires takes the town by storm, as the media descend on the city and criticize its Amish leaders for their notion of unconditional forgiveness and their outreach of support to the gunman’s widow. Through the eyes of a grieving mother, Ida Graber (Kimberly Williams-Paisley; Father of the Bride films, ”According to Jim”), and other devastated families, the film explores the Amish community’s astonishing reaction of compassion to the horrific events that shook their town and tested their faith.

Wow how time flies.

Jeremiah is going to Jr. High ( Ay, mama!),  Jonah to Kinder, Sarai to preschool.   One thing that has crossed my mind is, how I’m gonna deal with school supplies.   No fear gente… Staples is here to help.

Here are some helpful school supplies to help our scholar estudiantes to a successful school year! (Spanish version below)

TRES.VAN. AL. ESCUELA. Whooo Hoooo!!!!!!

No tengan miedo mis amigas…

Palomaya

Recently I was introduced to a new, hip Latina apparel line called Palomaya.  Palomaya- is a combination of the words Paloma (a dove) and with the name Maya. Company founder Lorena Musselman selected Maya in memory of her daughter.

Founder of Palomaya- Lorena Musselman

“Palomaya was founded to inspire, nurture and celebrate the fusion of the Latino and American cultures, and to share the gifts that I have been fortunate enough to receive along the way – Freedom, Strength and Love.”- Lorena

Que piensan when you hear Freedom, Strength, and love?  Do you think of your self?  If you are Latina, do these words describe how you live your vida?

I am going through several struggles with my familia and some personal issues.  I think of my youth, and I didn’t have the freedom I wanted to have.  I find strength in my faith, although, right now spiritually… I am struggling. Love… my one true passion.  Love.

Sorry if I sound like a downer, but reading through the Palomaya site,  it made me think alot.  I started this post off feeling really low.  Since then, I’ve read history behind Palomaya, and it made me change the way I was seeing life right now.

Like this for example:

“In being free, strong and overflowing with love, Palomaya finds the needs of those around us difficult to stomach. Yet they are even harder to ignore. Whether great or small, near or far, the Palomaya family knows that we can make a difference.”- Palomaya

How true is that, no?

Freedom: My blog.  My readers… you!

Strength: My kids.  My friends.  My God.

Love: My hubby. My familia.

My Thoughts:

It may sound dorky, getting Freedom, Strength, Love from a clothing line, but what’s behind the clothing line, is what  impacted me the most.

Gracias Palomaya. From one Latina to another… “Te deseo lo mejor”

Check out their site.  Pretty cute stuff… you know, for “us” trendy Latinas!

**Disclaimer** I received a t-shirt for my personal use.  I got nada but, positive vibes from this post.  (:

Ford Curve Control- Final

After the awesome Active Ford Assist test drive, we headed out to get in the ultra secret 2011 Ford Explorer to test out one of the new features it will have.

Curve Control.  It literally helps you when you take on a curve way to rapido.  According to Ford, there are more than 50,000 crashes each year in the U.S. alone on tight radius curves, such as freeway ramps.

  • Ford is pioneering the next frontier of safety with crash-avoidance innovations such as Curve Control, which launches on the all-new 2011 Ford Explorer and rolls out to 90 percent of Ford’s North American crossovers, sport utilities, trucks and vans by 2015
  • Curve Control is designed to help drivers maintain control of their vehicle when taking a curve too quickly, a situation found to contribute to approximately 50,000 crashes on curves each year in the U.S. alone
  • Curve Control senses when a vehicle is entering a curve too quickly, and can apply four-wheel smart braking to reduce vehicle speed by up to 10 mph in approximately one second and help drivers follow their intended path

Again, I was given the chance to be in the car with a FORD driver, and go super fast and take on a curve.  It was truly amazing.  The car senses the curve (that you over took) and brakes/slows/controls the car for you!  ~Increíble~

Other great safety features are:

MyKey- Another innovation from the company that introduced SYNC®, allows parents to limit speed and audio volume to encourage teens to drive safer and improve fuel efficiency.

Ford Driving Skills for Life (DSFL)-  Established in 2003 by Ford Motor Company Fund, the Governors Highway Safety Association, and a panel of safety experts to teach newly licensed teens the necessary skills for safe driving beyond what they learn in standard driver education programs. Español

My Ford Touch- MyFord Touch interface includes dual 4.2-inch LCD screens with corresponding five-way button steering wheel controls and an 8-inch touch screen all controlled by simplified SYNC® voice commands.

I swear…. sooner than later, we won’t have to leave our carritos fro anything anymore!!!! (:

This is my final post about my trip to Ford Motor Company.  This was truly a very informative and special trip.  Thanks to all at Ford who made this possible.

Read more about it here:

Enjoy!

Fugi FinePix- XP10

Have you heard of this camera?  It’s called FinePix- XP10.  It’s by Fugi.

It’s said to be the first in a new category of super-tough, ‘Four-Proof’ digital cameras -

Waterproof,

Freezeproof,

Shockproof and

Dustproof.

Fugi, let me add a fifth! I would add “Kidproof”

The FinePix XP10 is the ultimate lifestyle camera, you can drop it, soak it, freeze it, and even cover it in dirt, and this camera will come out unscathed.  See… totally “mommy/kid” proof.  This is perfect for the on-the-go MOM!

I have been a victim of “who do you save first”!  I know you are too!  You have a filthy/wet/sticky/sick kid in one hand and your camera in the other… Which one do you save/clean first?  Come on…. tell the verdad!!! (:

With this camera, I’d figure the only thing you would have to worry about is scratching the screen.  But, you can use a screen protector, and there ya have it!

  • The FinePix XP10 has a 12-MegaPixel CCD sensor.
  • 2.7” High-Contrast LCD for better viewing in bright sunlight and a high-precision.
  • Fujinon 5x periscopic optical zoom lens with a reinforced protective lens barrier.
  • The FinePix XP10 is only 21.7 mm1 thin, and retains the slick design of a conventional compact camera.
  • It comes in a choice of three different colors – silver, black and green.

The FinePix XP10 is waterproof up to 10 feet and it’s also shockproof up to 3 feet, freezeproof up to 14°F and dustproof, giving users total confidence that they can take it with them wherever they go, whatever they are doing, regardless of the conditions. The FinePix XP10 also offers clear movies with sound and high HD quality stills with one touch ease.

Here are some of my samples

Look at the bubbles!  So clear… (:

In addition to these innovations, the FinePix XP10 is loaded with the following features:

  • HD Capability The FinePix XP10 also offers stunning movies in 720p with sound and high quality stills with one touch ease.  Many consumers are happy to enjoy HD movies on their PC, but with the new HD Player (optional extra), which comes equipped with a remote control, families can gather around their home HDTV to enjoy amazingly detailed stills and high resolution movie playback.

  • Tracking Auto Focus (AF)Created specifically to capture an action shot, the AF function tracks fast moving subjects so they don’t escape from the frame in a blur.  Subjects will be tracked automatically for as long as it is kept in the frame and the shutter is half-pressed; when users fully press the shutter button your subject will be in the centre of the photo in perfect focus.
  • Movie Editing Mode and Blog mode: Get creative and add finishing touches to videos and images, among others, you can choose from B&W, Sepia, or you can even add a dynamic lighting effect, all this in-camera.
  • Facebook/YouTube Automatic Web Upload: Makes it much faster to post photos on these social networking sites.  While in playback mode, this feature allows users to ‘mark’ a picture for Facebook or You Tube upload.
  • Scene Recognition Auto (SR AUTO): This mode intelligently identifies the scene type and necessary shooting conditions to optimize picture perfect potential.
  • Face Detection and Automatic Red-eye Removal: To provide perfectly exposed and focused portrait shots, the FinePix XP10 is fitted with Fujifilm’s latest Face Detection technology which is able to track up to 10 faces simultaneously, at almost any angle to the camera. The system instantly corrects red-eye and then saves both the original and the corrected image file automatically.
  • Digital Image Stabilization: Reduces image blur automatically and offers creative adaptability and excellent picture quality.
  • Li-ion rechargeable battery: The long-life rechargeable Li-ion battery (up to 165 shots) allows for extended use without worrying if the camera is going to last for the duration of the trip.

Cool features, que no?

The FinePix XP10 is currently available in stores for $199.95. An accessory kit containing an adjustable float strap, protective silicone skin and a neoprene sports case is also available.

*Disclaimer*  I was given a camera for review.  I was not paid for this post.

Blast from the Past!

I’m still having issues with my laptop.  Hopefully, I can be up and running in a week.  Unless you have a laptop I can have for review…

I’m kidding. (:

Little by little posts will come!   Here is a post I wrote a while back, over at SV moms group.  Enjoy!

I have 3 and 5 year old toddlers at home.  Want to know what I love best about this age?  The phonics!  Yes, I think it’s so adorable how they pronounce their words.  Right now, my daughter has taken over my iphone.  She’s been playing an app that features the nursery rhyme “Humpty Dumpty”.  Every time she wants to play with it, she asks if she can play “Honkey Donkey” I LOVE IT! Cinderella is “chalowa” and she calls her cousin “Jofef” instead of Joseph.

My youngest son has the tendency to pronounce his “r” as a “w”.  Words like Grandma sound like “Gwanma” and his sisters name is “Sawai”.  There’s times when he does it, and time when he doesn’t.  Still, I think it’s too cute to correct!  I’m sure all this will be corrected in school, so all I want to do is savor the “baby” talk.  My favorite though is when he talks about the Philadelphia Eagles.  He calls them the Filiadopa Egos”  lol

When my 11 year old was that age, my husband and I would delight ourselves when he would sit and talk to us in his Toddler-nese.  Until now, we still say “funder” instead of Thunder, “baf” instead of bath and my favorite from him was “Townk” from wheels on the bus (all through the town).

As the kids get older, I know the cute mispronunciations go away.  I only have distant memories of what my oldest son sounded like as a toddler. Gosh, kids now-a-days grow up too fast! With video games and TV trashing their minds, it’s no wonder childhood innocence is lost.  I have a little fantasy that I love to daydream about whenever possible.  My fantasy would be that my kids would stay toddlers forever.  Sure, there’s the terrible 2′s to think about, or hair raising adventures like this, this and this, that would make any weak woman head for the hills.  I tend to think about the cute stuff like this, this and awww, this. At times it make me want to have them this age forever. Oh well, I know that my fantasy will never be, so to keep the memories alive (and documented) the only thing left to do is….
